Dinosaurs Invade Millburn

I spent last Friday with a high school art class in Millburn, New Jersey. We did a 4-hour workshop called DINOSAURS INVADE MILLBURN.

Each student had prepared a drawing of a street scene. Then they chose one of the scale dinosaur models that I brought along (There was also a flying monkey and a Bantha). They added the creatures to their scenes, keeping the perspective and lighting consistent.

It was a challenge, but the results were fabulous, a tribute to the students’ diligence and to the brilliant preparation of AP studio art teacher Kathleen Harte Gilsenan.

Is there a blog or so where we can see the results?

Looks like great fun!

did you create all of the models yourself? or is there anywhere they are available for purchase? Sounds like an amazing class!

Okay, that looks not only educational, but a terrific blast! Was there really a final picture with a Bantha and a flying monkey in it, too? :-)

I'll ask the teacher if there's any way to see the results. The models were mostly plastic miniatures from museum shops: Carnegie, etc. Also some Kaiyodo vinyl models and some resin models by top-flight contemporary sculptors. Yes, the Bantha and the flying monkey seemed right at home in New Jersey.

What a great project! Those kids will never forget that. They will go on to combine real life things with things from fantasy and their imaginations for a long time.

Ah man. Those kids are damn lucky. Now if you would do you think you could time travel back to 2006, come to Utah, and do this for my sophomore art class? :)

What?! I went to Millburn High. If only you'd visited 15 years earlier I might have gotten a headstart on my career as a scientific illustrator! What a fantastic opportunity for these kids. Bravo, Kathleen Harte Gilsenan.

I'd like to see the paintings those people come up with. I hope they're super cool like Dinotopia.
